304, 316 or 316L: Select the Grade by Exposure

304 

A practical choice for general industrial, indoor, food-processing, commercial and architectural environments where chloride or aggressive chemical exposure is limited.

Grade 304 offers a cost-effective balance of corrosion resistance, strength and appearance. Grade 304L may be preferred where a lower-carbon material is required for welded fabrication.

316 / 316L

Recommended for more demanding locations involving salt spray, coastal air, chlorides, aggressive washdown media or selected chemical processes.

The additional corrosion resistance can reduce premature replacement risk in marine, wastewater, chemical and offshore projects. Grade 316L may be selected for welded assemblies or project specifications requiring lower carbon content.

The final grade should be confirmed against the actual chemical, concentration, temperature, cleaning method and expected service life. When conditions are uncertain, provide the environmental details during the RFQ so the material choice can be reviewed instead of purchasing only by price.
